• Viewing the Long and Winding Career Road With Dr. Gail Weingast

  • Posted on November 18, 2021
  • These days, if you ask someone in the know about Dr. Gail Weingast, they will likely respond that she is counted among the best radiology specialists anywhere in the New England region, if not the entire country and possibly the entire world. By now, she has practiced at William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, Connecticut, for more than two decades and in that time, she has made a big difference. As that facility’s Chief of Ultrasound and Breast Imaging, she has led the transformation of the Backus Hospital radiology department into one of the best such departments in the nation.

While she is well-known now, it is clear Dr. Gail Weingast’s path to her current important position wasn't always a straight line. At first, the future Dr. Gail Weingast started her education with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. While it was pretty clear that a medical degree wasn’t a childhood dream, something must have changed in her soon after, because she worked very hard to be the best doctor she could be soon after.

After earning a Spanish Degree, she attended the Boston University School of Medicine, where she earned a medical degree in 1976 and officially became Dr. Gail Weingast MD. That was just the beginning, of course, as Now-Dr. Weingast had to complete a lot of post-graduate work in order to become a “real doctor” and eventually a renowned radiologist. Over the next seven years, she completed a series of internships and residencies in both pediatrics and radiology, as well as a fellowship in ultrasoundat hospitals in Denver, where she remained for years, until she headed to New York for a time and eventually ended up at Backus Hospital.
